Why would I want to participate?

In order to have a chance at making the Billboard music charts, your release must registered with SoundScan using your UPC number (for the whole album) and ISRC codes (for the individual tracks). If you do not register then your sales figures are not counted, and you remain invisible to the system.

Is there a cost to participate in SoundScan?

At the time of this guide's publication, SoundScan registration is still free of charge.

What is required to sign up with SoundScan?

Signing up with SoundScan requires that your release has an official UPC number. The UPC number consists of the 12 digits listed below the UPC barcode used to identify your release.

Single Tracks may also be tracked via SoundScan. This requires that you get an ISRC code (International Standard Recording Code) for each track that you are selling individually. (Please note that you will still need a UPC code, even if you are just registering tracks. UPC is a required field on the SoundScan track registration form.)
