What is a Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC-18) Barcode? |
The Serial Shipping Container Code is a 18-digit barcode (preceded by a “(00)”) placed on the outside of your shipping carton or pallet. The SCC-18 allows your distributer or retailer to scan your shipment of each carton or pallet as it moves through the retail chain individually. The extra digits make the SSCC-18 different than SCC-14, you assign each pallet to be shipped a different ID number within the code. This allows you, your retailer, or distributor to differentiate today’s pallet of wheat shipped to Whole Foods from yesterday’s pallet of wheat shipped to Target. SSCC barcode are also referred as SSCC-18, GTIN-18, EAN-18, Serial Shipping Container Code, and Serialized Master Carton Code.

Why do I need SSCC-18 Barcodes?
|
The common method by which your retailer scans your product shipments into inventory is a shipping container code. Additionally, distributors use them to scan receipt of shipments. Whether you need a Shipping Container Code (SCC-14) or a Serialize Shipping Container Code (SSCC-18) depends on:
- Your retailer requirements
- Your distributor requirements
- Your desire to track individual master cartons or pallets
|
|
Is the SSCC-18 the same as the SSC-14 Code?
|
No, it is not. The SCC-14 is used to check-in your shipments of multiple units of your product at the warehouse in the back of their stores. Both codes identify your cases, cartons, pallets, or other logistic units. The primary difference between them is that the SSCC-18 gives you more flexibility to track each individual pallet or case by allowing you to create and change the unique serial number. Let’s look at an example:
Let’s say that you ship pallets of oatmeal to Target and also to Costco…

You could either put a SCC-14 barcode on these pallets which would be the same for each shipment irrespective of, at what time it was shipped or to whom. If you, your retailer, or distributor do not bother to track each pallet that would be adequate.
|
The other way would be to put a different SSCC-18 barcode on each and every pallet that you ship out. Using the unique serial number, the extra digits that make the SSCC-18 different, you allocate each pallet to be shipped a different ID number inside the code. This allows you, your retailer, or distributor to distinguish today’s pallet of oatmeal shipped to Target from yesterday’s pallet of oatmeal shipped to Costco.
